What Is Thyroid Scan?
A thyroid scan is a nuclear medicine imaging test used to evaluate the structure and function of the thyroid gland. By administering a small amount of radioactive tracer, the scan highlights areas of activity within the gland, providing detailed images of its size, shape, and functionality. This non-invasive diagnostic tool is crucial for identifying thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, and goiter. It also aids in detecting the presence of thyroid cancer and assessing the effectiveness of treatments like radioactive iodine therapy or surgery. The scan offers valuable insights for precise diagnosis and personalized care.
Applications of Thyroid Scan in Bangalore
-
Evaluation of Thyroid Function:
Assesses the thyroid gland's activity, helping to determine whether it is overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (Thyroiditis).
-
Detection of Thyroid Nodules and Goiter:
Identifies abnormal growths, nodules, or an enlarged thyroid gland, aiding in early diagnosis and management.
-
Thyroid Cancer Assessment:
Detects the presence of thyroid cancer and evaluates its spread, helping guide treatment decisions.
-
Post-Treatment Monitoring:
Evaluates the effectiveness of treatments such as radioactive iodine therapy or thyroid surgery, ensuring appropriate therapeutic outcomes.
-
Preoperative Planning:
Provides detailed information on the gland's structure and functionality to aid in planning surgical interventions, if necessary.
-
Investigation of Neck Masses:
Differentiates between thyroid-related abnormalities and other neck masses, ensuring accurate diagnosis and management.

How Does Thyroid Scan Work?
-
Injection of Radiotracer:
A small amount of a radiopharmaceutical tracer, usually iodine-123 or technetium-99m, is administered orally or via injection, depending on the specific scan protocol.
-
Selective Accumulation:
The tracer accumulates in the thyroid gland, concentrating in areas of active thyroid tissue. This allows for the assessment of thyroid function and structure.
-
Gamma Camera Imaging:
Using a gamma camera, images are captured based on the gamma rays emitted by the tracer. These images reveal the size, shape, and activity of the thyroid gland, distinguishing between normal and abnormal areas.
-
Image Analysis:
The images are analyzed to evaluate thyroid nodules, identify overactive (hot) or underactive (cold) areas, and assess overall gland functionality.
-
Report Generation:
A detailed report is prepared summarizing the findings, aiding doctors in diagnosing and managing thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism, Thyroiditis, ectopic thyroid, congenital hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, or cancer.

How to prepare for a Thyroid scan?
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
If you are pregnant or suspect you might be or are breastfeeding, inform your doctor and the technologist before your appointment. Thyroid scans are generally not recommended for pregnant women due to radiation exposure. Breastfeeding women may need to take special precautions as advised by their doctor.
Medications and Supplements:
Inform your doctor and technologist about any medications you are taking, including vitamins, herbal supplements, and any substances containing iodine, such as kelp, seaweed, cough syrups, and multivitamins. Some medications, especially those related to your thyroid or heart, may need to be discontinued 3 days before the scan. Discuss how they should be used before and during the test.
Previous Medical Procedures:
Inform your doctor if you’ve had any tests (like an X-ray or CT scan), surgeries, or treatments using iodinated contrast material within the last two months. Avoid any imaging tests using radioactive iodine for six weeks before your thyroid scan.
Dietary Restrictions:
You may be asked to avoid foods containing iodine, such as dairy products, shellfish, sushi, kelp, seaweed, iodized salt, and certain seasonings, for about a week before your scan. Refrain from using products like antihistamines, cough syrups, and supplements containing iodine.
Blood Tests and Fasting:
A few days before your scan, your doctor may request blood tests to measure thyroid hormone levels. You may be required to fast for several hours before the exam, as eating can affect the accuracy of the scan.
Jewelry and Metal Objects:
Remove any jewelry, dentures, or other metal accessories before the scan, as these may interfere with the procedure.
Allergies and Medical Conditions:
Inform your doctor about any allergies, recent illnesses, or other medical conditions, particularly any allergies to iodine, medications, or anesthetics.
Radioactive Iodine Therapy:
If you’ve undergone radioactive iodine therapy or are taking medications like Neomercazole, Eltroxin, or PTU, you may need to discontinue them for 3 days before your appointment.
