What Is MDP Scan?
An MDP Scan (Methylene Diphosphonate Scan) is a nuclear medicine imaging test that evaluates bone health by using a radioactive tracer, typically technetium-99m labeled MDP, which is injected into the bloodstream. The tracer binds to bone tissue, allowing for the detection of abnormal metabolic activity in the bones. This scan is useful for diagnosing conditions such as bone fractures, infections, arthritis, bone metastases, and other bone disorders. It provides valuable insights into bone structure and function, helping doctors identify issues early and determine appropriate treatments.
Applications of MDP Scan in Bangalore
-
Evaluation of Bone Health:
Assesses the overall bone structure and function, helping to identify abnormalities such as bone infections, fractures, or inflammation.
-
Detection of Bone Metastasis:
Identifies the spread of cancer to bones, particularly useful in patients with a history of cancers like breast, prostate, or lung cancer.
-
Bone Infections:
Detects areas of infection within the bones, such as osteomyelitis, by highlighting regions of abnormal metabolic activity.
-
Preoperative Planning:
Provides detailed images of the bone structure to guide surgical planning, especially in cases of fractures, infections, or abnormal growths.
-
Assessment of Bone Diseases:
Helps in diagnosing bone-related conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, or Paget's disease by identifying changes in bone metabolism.
-
Post-Treatment Monitoring:
Evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for bone conditions, including chemotherapy or radiation therapy for bone metastases.

How Does MDP Scan Work?
-
Injection of Radiotracer:
A small amount of MDP (Methylene Diphosphonate), a radiopharmaceutical tracer, is injected into the patient’s bloodstream.
-
Selective Accumulation:
The tracer binds to areas of active bone metabolism, particularly regions with high calcium turnover, such as fractures, infections, or cancerous lesions.
-
Gamma Camera Imaging:
Using a gamma camera, images are captured based on the gamma rays emitted by the tracer, providing a detailed visualization of bone structure and areas of abnormal activity.
-
Image Analysis:
The images are analyzed to identify fractures, bone infections (osteomyelitis), tumors, or metastatic disease, and to assess bone health or healing processes.
-
Report Generation:
The findings from the MDP scan are compiled into a detailed report, assisting doctors in diagnosing and planning treatment for bone-related conditions.

How to prepare for an MDP scan?
Hydration:
Ensure you are well-hydrated before and during the examination. Drink at least two 8-ounce glasses of water between the time of radiopharmaceutical injection and delayed imaging.
Continue drinking fluids and void frequently for at least 24 hours after the injection to promote excretion and minimize radiation exposure.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
If you are pregnant or suspect you might be or are breastfeeding, inform your doctor and the technologist before the procedure. Although adverse effects are rare, precautions are necessary. Breastfeeding women may need to pause breastfeeding for 4-24 hours, depending on the radiopharmaceutical used.
Medications and Medical History:
Continue taking your medications as usual unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. Inform your doctor and technologist about any medications you are taking, including any that may interfere with bone scintigraphy. Provide your healthcare provider with relevant clinical information, including any recent imaging studies, history of fractures, surgeries, or any conditions affecting bone metabolism.
Previous Reports and Prescription:
Bring all previous reports, CDs, and scanned images with you. If available, also bring the doctor’s prescription for the scan.
Jewelry and Metal Objects:
Remove any jewelry, dentures, or other metal accessories before the scan, as these may interfere with the procedure.
Bladder Emptying:
Empty your bladder immediately before imaging if the pelvis is being imaged also frequently between the injection and delayed imaging to improve image quality.
No Special Dietary Preparations:
There are no specific dietary restrictions before an MDP scan. Continue eating normally unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider.
Special Precautions:
Inform the technologist if you have conditions like Thalassemia major or hemochromatosis, as these can affect radiopharmaceutical uptake. If you have reduced renal function, it’s important to optimize your renal function and ensure adequate hydration, as this can impact the quality of the images.

Frequently asked questions
An MDP (Methylene Diphosphonate) scan is a type of bone scan that uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to evaluate bone health, detect abnormalities, and monitor conditions such as bone infections, fractures, arthritis, and cancer. The scan helps in assessing bone metabolism and detecting areas of abnormal bone activity.
During an MDP scan, a small amount of radioactive material is injected into the patient’s bloodstream. This tracer is absorbed by the bones, particularly in areas of high metabolic activity. A specialized camera detects the radiation and creates detailed images, allowing doctors to assess the bone structure and identify any abnormalities.
You will receive an injection of the radioactive tracer, which takes about 2-3 hours to be absorbed by your bones. After this waiting period, you will be asked to lie down on the scan table, and the imaging process will take around 20-30 minutes. The scan is non-invasive and painless.
At Kiranpet Diagnostics, you can expect to receive a soft copy of your scan report via WhatsApp or email within 3-5 hours. The hard copy can be collected from our center at your convenience.
There are no specific preparations for the MDP scan. You may be asked to drink plenty of water before the procedure. However, it’s important to inform us about any medications you are taking or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Yes, the MDP scan is considered safe. The radioactive material used is in very small amounts, and the procedure carries minimal risk. However, it is important to inform the medical team at Kiranpet Diagnostics if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
