Sarcoidosis PET CT Scan
A Sarcoidosis PET CT scan is a diagnostic imaging test used to detect and assess sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease that causes granulomas (small clusters of immune cells) in organs like the lungs, lymph nodes, heart, and skin. This scan uses a radiotracer (such as FDG) to highlight areas of active inflammation, helping doctors evaluate disease extent, monitor progression, and guide treatment decisions. It is particularly useful in cases where other imaging methods provide inconclusive results.
Scan Procedure
Please Note: The following guidelines outline the standard procedure for FDG scans. Variations may occur based on individual patient needs. If there are any deviations from this process, they will be due to specific patient requirements. For further clarification or assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to our staff.
NOTE: In case of emergency patients (e.g., stretcher, wheelchair, high-grade fever, oxygen-dependent), they will be given priority. We appreciate your cooperation.
1. Appointment Scheduling
- Schedule your appointment one day in advance.
- If your appointment was scheduled several days in advance, please confirm it with us one day before the scan.
2. Arrival and Reception
- On the day of your appointment, proceed to the floor where your scan is scheduled
- At reception, your name, age, gender, referring doctor, and medical history will be recorded.
- A KNM ID will be assigned to you for identification throughout the process.
3. Preparation For Injection
- Your blood glucose level will be checked upon arrival
- If glucose levels are high, the technologist will consult the doctor for further instructions:
- The doctor may decide to inject FDG immediately.
- Alternatively, the doctor may instruct waiting or rescheduling the scan
4. FDG Injection
- Once the FDG drug is prepared, it will be injected.
- You will need to wait for 1 to 1.5 hour to allow the drug to spread throughout your body.
5. Initial Scan
- After the waiting period, you will be taken for the scan, which will last approximately 30-40 minutes.
6. Doctor’s Evaluation
- The doctor will review the initial scan images
- If necessary, a delayed scan will be scheduled based on your specific case.
7. Delayed Scan:
- The timing for a delayed scan may range from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on individual circumstances.
8. Report Collection
- A soft copy of your scan report will be sent to you via WhatsApp or email within 2.5 to 5 hours.
- If there is a high patient load or if the report requires consultation with the referring doctor, the report delivery time may vary.
- The hard copy of the report will be ready at the same time as the soft copy. You may collect it from the centre at your convenience, either at the time the soft copy is ready or at a later time that suits you.

- Cheese, and boiled non starchy vegetables. Leafy vegetables like broccoli (for veg-eaters)
Avoid consuming anything else apart from the mentioned items.
2. Hydration
Drink plenty of water before the scan, typically 1-2 Litre over a few hours, but avoid any other beverages. This helps with the distribution of the FDG tracer in your body and also reduces radiation exposure by diluting the tracer in the urine.
3. Diabetes Management:
Avoid taking insulin and anti-diabetic medications on the day of the scan unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
4. Creatinine levels:
A creatinine test must be performed within 2-3 months before the FDG PET scan. If the test was done over 3 months ago, it should be repeated to ensure levels are within the normal range (0.8-1.2/1.4 mg/dL). If necessary, we can perform this test at our center, though it may delay the scan.
