Procedure For MPI Scan
Appointment Scheduling
1. Please schedule your appointment one day in advance.
2. If your appointment was scheduled several days in advance, kindly confirm it with us one day before the procedure to ensure everything is in order.
Arrival and Reception
1. On day of your scheduled scan, please proceed to the reception desk upon arrival.
2. Our receptionist will provide you with detailed information about the procedure and guide you through the necessary steps.
On-Floor Appointment and Medication Preparation
Once you arrive and the on-floor appointment is confirmed, the necessary medication for the scan will be prepared.
Incubation Period
After the medication has been labeled and prepared, there will be an incubation period of approximately 25-30 minutes before it can be injected.
Injection
1. The patient will be injected with the prepared medication after the incubation period.
2. Following the injection, the patient will need to wait for about 1 hour before the first scan.
3. In this 1hr, patient should consume good amount of fatty food for the next scan to take place.
Stress Induction and Injection
Stress Induction Methods:
1. Treadmill (TMP): Stress will be induced using a treadmill for patients who can walk or run, typically lasting about 5-10 minutes. The medication will be injected during the treadmill test.
2. Adenosine: For patients who cannot walk or run, or based on individual cases, stress will be induced using adenosine. This involves a 2-minute adenosine infusion followed by a 1-minute drug injection, lasting about 5-10 minutes.
Waiting Period and Scan
1. After the stress induction and injection, the patient should wait for another 1 hour.
2. Following this waiting period, the second scan, which lasts around 15 minutes, will be conducted.
Report Collection
1. A soft copy of the scan reports will be sent to you via WhatsApp or email within 3-5 hours.
2. The hard copy of the reports can be collected from the center at your convenience.
Preparation For MPI Scan
Medication and Supplements
1. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking(If you have asthma, inform your doctor as medications for asthma may contain theophylline.), including over-the-counter medicines, herbs, and vitamins. You may be advised to stop certain medications before the test, particularly those containing theophylline, caffeine, or those that slow the heart rate.
2. If you are scheduled for a pharmacologic myocardial perfusion scan, avoid taking theophylline medications 48 hours before the test, and avoid caffeine-containing products for 12 to 24 hours prior.
Clothing
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and shoes suitable for exercise. You may be asked to change into a patient gown, and lockers will be provided to secure personal belongings. Remove all jewelry, piercings, and any other metal objects before the test, as these can interfere with the imaging.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or think you may be, consult your doctor before scheduling the exam. Breastfeeding women should notify their healthcare provider due to the potential risk of contaminating breast milk with the radiotracer. You may need to pause breastfeeding for a period after the scan.
Pacemaker or Implanted Devices
Notify your doctor if you have a pacemaker or any implanted devices, as these can affect the test results.
Pre-test Instructions
If exercise is not possible due to medical reasons, pharmacologic stress agents may be used to induce stress.
Allergies and Sensitivities
Inform the technologist or the concerned team, if you have any allergies to medications, contrast dyes, or iodine. Although allergic reactions to the radiotracer are rare, it's essential to notify the staff of any sensitivities.
Procedure Duration
Sometimes, MPI scan may be performed over two separate days, It’ll be informed to you post first day of the scan.
