Preparation For MDP Scan

Both Single Phase and Triple Phase Scans

Hydration

1. Ensure you are well-hydrated before and during the examination. Drink at least two 8-ounce glasses of water between the time of radiopharmaceutical injection and delayed imaging.

2. Continue drinking fluids and void frequently for at least 24 hours after the injection to promote excretion and minimize radiation exposure.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

1. If you are pregnant, suspect you might be, or are breastfeeding, inform your doctor and the technologist before the procedure. Although adverse effects are rare, precautions are necessary.

2. Breastfeeding women may need to pause breastfeeding for 4-24 hours, depending on the radiopharmaceutical used.

Medications and Medical History

1. Continue taking your medications as usual unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. Inform your doctor and technologist about any medications you are taking, including any that may interfere with bone scintigraphy.

2. Provide your healthcare provider with relevant clinical information, including any recent imaging studies, history of fractures, surgeries, or any conditions affecting bone metabolism.

Previous Reports and Prescription

Bring all previous reports, CDs, and scan images with you. If available, also bring the doctor's prescription for the scan.

Jewelry and Metal Objects

Avoid wearing any jewelry or metal objects during the scan as these may interfere with the test.

Bladder Emptying

If you are pregnant or suspect you might be, inform the doctor before booking the appointment. Renal scans are generally not recommended for pregnant women.

Special Precautions

1. Inform the technologist if you have conditions like Thalassemia major or hemochromatosis, as these can affect radiopharmaceutical uptake.

2. If you have reduced renal function, it’s important to optimize your renal function and ensure adequate hydration, as this can impact the quality of the images.

If you need more information about the test, consult with the doctor when booking your appointment. They will provide the necessary instructions.
