Cardiac Viability PET

Cardiac Viability PET is an advanced imaging test that assesses heart muscle function and blood flow to determine if damaged tissue can recover. It uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to highlight viable heart tissue, helping doctors evaluate conditions like coronary artery disease and heart failure. This scan is crucial in deciding whether a patient would benefit from procedures like bypass surgery or angioplasty. By accurately identifying viable myocardium, Cardiac Viability PET aids in optimizing treatment plans for better heart health.

Preparations For Cardiac Viability PET

Fasting

You should fast for at least 4-6 hours before the scan. This includes avoiding all food, gum, candy, and any drinks other than water. The reason for this is to minimize blood sugar levels, which can interfere with the FDG uptake by the cells.

Hydration

Drink plenty of water before the scan, typically 1-2 Litre over a few hours, but avoid any other beverages. This helps with the distribution of the FDG tracer in your body and also reduces radiation exposure by diluting the tracer in the urine.

Medication

If you are on medications that affect blood sugar, consult with your doctor for specific instructions.
