Brain SPECT Scan Procedure

SPECT Scan in bangalore

Brain SPECT Scan

A Brain SPECT scan is a nuclear imaging test that assesses brain function and blood flow to assist in diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, seizures, and brain injury. After a small dose of radioactive tracer is injected into the body, several images are obtained using a gamma camera. Patients may need to refrain from eating, drinking, or taking caffeine for a specified period. As an advanced imaging technique, a Brain SPECT scan can demonstrate abnormalities that a standard CT or MRI scan may miss, allowing a comprehensive evaluation of the brain to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Brain SPECT Scan Procedure

Please note: The following guidelines outline the standard procedure for a TC-99m ECD Scan. However, variations may occur based on individual case requirements. If there are any deviations from this process, they will be due to specific patient needs. We encourage you to reach out to our staff for any further clarification or assistance.

Appointment Scheduling:

Please schedule your appointment one day in advance. If you have scheduled your appointment several days in advance, please confirm the appointment with us one day prior to the procedure.

Standard Procedure –

  • Medication will be prepared, which will take around 30 mins.
  • After the medication is prepared, it will be injected into the patient.
  • Following the injection, the patient will wait in a dark room for approximately 45 mins – 1.5 hours.
  • During this period, the patient may drink water and eat if desired. The patient must strictly not use mobile phones/any electronic gadgets during their stay in the dark room

 Extended Observation (if needed)

  • In certain cases, the doctor may recommend keeping the patient in a dark room for two consecutive days, each session lasting approximately 2 hours.
  • This decision will be based on the doctor’s assessment of the patient’s condition.

Tablet and Injection Combination –

  • For some patients, a tablet will be administered first, followed by a waiting period of around 2 hours in a dark room or in some cases, tablets will be given at the hospital and in those cases, we’ll go ahead with the further procedure at our centre.
  • During this time, the injection will be given, with the exact time between injection and scan varying based on the patient’s response to the medication.
Note: The doctor will oversee the entire process, confirming the waiting periods and whether extended observation or additional steps are required. While this is the standard procedure, adjustments are made for individual patient needs.
