What Is MPI Scan?
Applications of MPI Scan in Bangalore
- Detection of Coronary Artery Disease: Identifies blockages or narrowing in the coronary arteries, helping to diagnose and assess the severity of coronary artery disease.
- Assessment of Myocardial Perfusion: Evaluates blood flow to different areas of the heart muscle during rest and stress, highlighting regions with reduced blood supply.
- Post-Treatment Evaluation: Monitors the effectiveness of treatments like angioplasty, stent placement, or bypass surgery in restoring proper blood flow to the heart.
- Risk Stratification for Heart Disease: Helps in predicting the risk of future cardiac events, enabling proactive management and prevention strategies.
- Assessment of Heart Function: Measures heart function, including the ejection fraction, providing insights into the overall health and pumping efficiency of the heart.
- Evaluation of Chest Pain: Differentiates between cardiac and non-cardiac causes of chest pain, guiding appropriate treatment and management.

How Does MPI Scan Work?
-
Injection of Radiotracer:
A small amount of a radiopharmaceutical tracer, such as Technetium-99m or Thallium, is injected into the patient’s bloodstream to assess blood flow to the heart.
-
Selective Accumulation by Heart Muscle:
The tracer is carried through the bloodstream and taken up by the heart muscle. Areas with good blood flow absorb the tracer, while regions with reduced blood flow show lower uptake.
-
Stress and Rest Imaging:
The first phase of imaging is performed while the heart is under stress, either through physical exercise or medication that simulates exercise.
The second phase of image is performed while the heart is under rest.
-
Gamma Camera Imaging:
A gamma camera detects the gamma rays emitted by the tracer, creating detailed images of blood flow and distribution in the heart muscle.
-
Image Analysis:
The images from the stress and rest phases are compared to identify areas of reduced blood flow, indicating ischemia or previous damage to the heart.
-
Report Generation:
The findings are compiled into a comprehensive report to help doctors diagnose and manage conditions such as coronary artery disease (CAD), evaluate heart function, and plan treatment strategies.

How to prepare for an MPI scan?
Medications and Supplements:
You must inform your healthcare provider about all the ongoing medications you have. This includes over-the-counter medicines, herbs, and vitamins. You may be advised to stop certain medications before the test, particularly those containing theophylline, and caffeine, or those that slow the heart rate.
If you are scheduled for a pharmacologic myocardial perfusion scan, avoid taking theophylline medications 48 hours before the test, and avoid caffeine-containing products for 12 to 24 hours prior.
Dietary Restrictions:
You will have to avoid caffeine consumption, including coffee, tea, soft drinks, and chocolate, for 24 hours before the test. Your doctor will provide specific instructions regarding food and liquid intake.
Avoid eating or drinking after midnight before the test day might also be asked of you. Fasting may be required for at least 4 hours before the procedure.

Clothing and Personal Items:
You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and shoes suitable for exercise. You may be asked to change into a patient gown, and lockers will be provided to secure personal belongings. Remove all jewelry, piercings, and any other metal objects before the test, as these can interfere with the imaging.
Pacemaker or Implanted Devices:
Notify your doctor if you have a pacemaker or any implanted devices, as these can affect the test results.
Pre-Test Instructions:
If exercise is not possible due to medical reasons, pharmacologic stress agents may be used to induce stress.
Allergies and Sensitivities:
Inform the technologist or the concerned team, if you have any allergies to medications, contrast dyes, or iodine. Although allergic reactions to the radiotracer are rare, it’s essential to notify the staff of any sensitivities.

Frequently asked questions
An MPI (Myocardial Perfusion Imaging) scan is a non-invasive nuclear medicine test that evaluates blood flow to the heart muscles, helping diagnose coronary artery disease and other cardiac conditions.
An MPI scan typically takes 2-4 hours, including preparation, imaging during rest, and stress-testing phases.
Yes, MPI scans are safe. They use a small amount of radioactive material to create detailed images, with minimal risk and significant diagnostic benefits.
MPI scans help detect coronary artery disease, assess blood flow to the heart, evaluate chest pain, and measure heart function, such as ejection fraction.
Yes, preparation may include fasting for 4-6 hours, avoiding caffeine, and informing your doctor about medications.
Most patients do not experience side effects. Some may feel mild discomfort from the stress test or injection, which the trained professionals monitor closely.
